The Value of Public Art

I have been creating original sculpture for over 15 years. After winning grand prize in my first juried sculpture exhibition I was encouraged to invest more of myself in creating art.

As I became more and more involved in art I became mor and more conscious of the public aspects of art. Watching how people react in art museums, art galleries and public art.

For a number of years now I have been involved in public art, both as a sculptor and as an advocate.

Communities without public art seem almost too sterile too cookie cutter. Public art helps provide character and richness to a community.

Some states have adopted Percent for the Arts programs and in most cases this has created a big boom in the amount of public art created.

In some cases the dollars set aside for public art are used to cover project overruns or added costs due to achitectural celebrity.

I serve on boards and commissions as an advocate for the arts and for public art in particular. Some might see this as self serving, and to seom extent it is, in that the more public art there is in general the more opportunities there will be for all sculptors.

One of the boards on which I serve is the Hamilton, Ohio City of Sculpture (www.cityofsculpture.org). City of Sculpture was a designation promoted for Hamilton, Ohio as a means to help turn around a rust belt community.

Since its inception in the City of Sculpture board has been responsible for the placement of over 30 pieces of public art valued at well over $2.5 million. All of which has been paid for through fund raising by the board.

City of Sculpture has become known for its sculpture and the community at large has become recognized for its advances.

I currently chair the Montgomery, Ohio Arts Commission. This commission provides for volunteer efforts to foster the arts in the city of Montgomery. The arts commission has presented programs with visual artists, performance artists, cullinary artists and more.

My involvement in these arts organizations continue to emphasize to me the value of public art in communities.
